The Complete Guide to Madonna Remixes – Part 1

I’m a big fan of 12″ singles – the maxi-singles largely of a bygone era that include not only B-sides, but alternate mixes and edits of my favorite tracks. And when it comes to 12″ singles, there are a few artists I obsess over, but none more than Madonna.

Madonna is the greatest solo artist of my generation, and her amazing and substantial catalog of singles backs that up; “Vogue,” “Like A Virgin,” “Material Girl,” “Hung Up,” “Crazy For You,” the list of unforgettable classics is nearly endless. And nearly all of these legendary tunes have remixes and edits associated with them, mixes that sometimes radically alter a song or make it even better.

And they can be a real pain in the ass to find. While many artists who started in the 80s have embraced the retrospective box set and collection model, releasing all (or at least the best) versions of their singles in easy-to-buy formats, Madonna’s singles discography remains stubbornly scattered across countless records, CDs and cassette tapes. And since a lot of her songs have a shockingly large number of remixes (easily sometimes going into the double digits) this can be a real problem to those obsessive fans like myself, who want every version possible.

This list is an attempt to make it a little easier to track down these mixes, by cataloging every official mix and edit of every song Madonna has released as a single. It is a work in progress, and I am not immune to making mistakes, so if you feel I that I have made an error, please detail it in the comments and I will do my best to fix it. I’m also not going to detail exactly where you can find each mix, Discogs can be your guide for that, I’m just letting you know they exist.

I hope this list is helpful to my fellow obsessive Madonna collectors.

And I hope my friends don’t think I’m insane for putting this together.

That’s a pretty impressive effort. I wonder if there’s a website out there like this one (the linked one is for the Pet Shop Boys). http://www.psb-discography.com/

  • KL says:

Actually, Crazy For You in its full length incarnation is available only on the Vision Quest soundtrack and the 12″ single. Versions of it on the 7″ single and Something To Remember compilation actually fades out early.

    • James Eldred says:

The original 7″ is the album version. You can go to Discogs and see the running times on the labels.

The 1991 7″ single has the the edit.

      • Wrong. The original 7″ runs 3:57. It does not contain the album version. Discogs is wrong. I and many others actually own the original 7″ . Also, the version on Something To Remember is a recreation of the 7″ version but it is faded incorrectly and runs a few seconds longer than the original 7″.

  • MLP says:

Very cool, helpful and much appreciated, cheers!

  • d-Wizz says:

This is a very useful post and has helped answer many questions, such as confirming that the 7″ version of “Holiday” has never appeared on CD anywhere (but you can easily make you own almost-identical edit from the album version).

Would love you to go just one more year up to “Rescue Me”, especially since the very next single would be “Keep it Together”, which was released in some territories as an A-side, while it was a double-A with “Vogue” in others (such as here in Australia – although I do own separate Aus-pressed 12″ singles of both songs). “Vogue” itself was released in about seven different formats, three of which were apparently deleted 7 days after release!

Cheers and thanks again for your great work!

  • Stuart says:

Thanks for the impressive work! 🙂 Very useful for us remix collectors! You might want to add the “It’s That Girl” promo cassette remixes. Most of them are actually edited versions of the 12″ remixes. And if you can’t find those versions anywhere, I have it converted to mp3! 😀 You can check some info about it here:
    http://www.madonna-decade.co.uk/its-that-girl-promo-only.html

  • Fernando says:

Thank you for this excellent resource. There are 2 more remixes of Open Your Heart: the Remix version on the UK 7″ single and the promo-only edit of the extended version, available on the US promo 7″ single.

  • Fernando says:

There is also a remix/edit of Express Yourself (4:50) on the US promo CD single.

  • Thomas says:

Very nice to have a list like this!

    Things you can add:
La Isla Bonita [Immaculate Collection Remix]
Express Yourself [Shep’s Pressin’ Himself Re-Remix] (9:34) From the justify my love single

  • Ben says:

For ‘Like A Prayer’ does anyone know where I can find this version commercially available? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqV-mdAWrBA It’s not listed above; it’s basically the 7″ version extended with no fade out on the guitar at the end. It’s my favourite so I’d love to know if anyone has an idea where I could find it. Thanks!

    • Saverio says:

@Ben, I don’t think that this version you’re looking for really exists on an official release. Pretty sure that someone combined the 7″ Version with the Extended Remix ending. 😉

  • DiscoMix says:

Actually, there is one more official version of “La Isla Bonita”
7″ Remix Edit [4:01] – Only on some 7″ singles.

Album Version [4:03] – Available on True Blue and Celebration.
Extended Remix [5:26] – On various 12″ and CD singles as well as the 2001 remastered version of True Blue.
Instrumental [5:20] – On various 12″ and CD singles.
    7″ Instrumental [4:20] – Only on the 7″ single.

  • Darren Turner says:

Also the 7inch remix of Open your Heart was the A side of the record , this version has never been released on CD. True Blue 7inch remix has also never been released on CD, La is La Bonita 7inch remix is only available on the Hits 6 Collection

    • Saverio says:

There’s one 2-CD compilation called “32 ONES ON ONE” (Radio 1’s 25th Birthday 1967-1992) which features the 7″ Remix of True Blue. There’s no mention on the labels that it’s the remix version, so even I discovered it accidentally, once I listened to the CD! you can easily find that CD on ebay for little money, check it out!
